The Swedish Society for the Study of Russia, Central and East Europe, and Central Asia

The Swedish Society for the Study of Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia (Sällskapet för studier av Ryssland, Central-och Östeuropa samt Centralasien) was founded in 1997. The aim of the Society is to further the study of Russia, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia in Sweden. It functions as a network for people for the distribution of information about ongoing research, seminars, publications, and for providing a forum for debate on the Internet among its members. It works to encourage a broader interest in research and to augment networking and cooperation with and between individual university departments and other organizations.

The Society arranges lectures and conferences for its members, and public seminars in cooperation with the universities and/or other organizations. On its web site - www.sallskapet.org - both members and the public can share information and news from this field of research. Its closed discussion list on the Internet forms a forum for debate and exchange of information for the members. Furthermore, the Society publishes the quarterly on-line journal - Östbulletinen. The Society is based in Stockholm, although its 240 members can be found all over Sweden with concentrations in the university cities.

Members come from a number of different fields while they have in common a professional concern with Russia, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. There are specialists from the areas of political science, sociology, economics, geography, history and philology, but also translators, diplomats, journalists and teachers. Membership is granted after recommendation.

The Society explicitly defines its geographical area of research as including not only Central and East European countries but also the Caucasus and Central Asia.

Since June 2003 the Society is represented in the ICCEES Executive Committee.
